The cradle of Finnish culture, Karelia gave birth to an important cultural movement in the 19th century. Many painters, writers, architects and composers found in the Karelian forest the authentic roots of Finland. This is how the "peasant myth" was born. The triumphant national romanticism, "considered as the golden age of Finnish art," restrained young creators who wanted to take other paths.
